Alex began his career in the youth system of Grêmio Mauaense FC, known locally as Mauaense, based in MauáSão Paulo state. In 2008, he left Brazil to sign with FC Wohlen in the Swiss 1. Liga gr. 2 (Switzerland's 4th Tier - Group 2). Making his professional debut on 4th August 2008 versus FC St. Gallen, coming on as a 61st minute substitute in a 1-3 defeat. During the 2009/10 season he was loaned to Gossau who plyed their trade in Group 3 of the same league tier.   He returned to Wohlen the following season and became a regular starter for the club as he made 48 league appearances and scoring six goals in two seasons.

On April 26, 2012, Alex signed a deal with Chicago Fire in America's Major League Soccer. He officially joined the squad on 27th June 2012 and made his debut days later on 30th June away to Sporting City Kansas.  Again coming on as a substitute (64th minute) in a 1-0 victory for Chicago Fire. As of April 13, 2015 he was traded to the Houston Dynamo.  Released by Houston at the end of their 2017, Alex later signed for K League 2 side Suwon FC.  His debut for the Korean side was on 4th March 2018 in a 1-0 home victory over Seoul E-Land.  His first goal came in the 3rd Round of the Korean Cup on 28th March in a 4-0 victory over Jungwon University.  Alex scoring Suwon's second goal on 53 minutes.  His first league goal came in Round 5 on March 31st against FC Anyang.  The side he would join next.  After leaving Suwon for FC Anyang, Alex made his debut on 2nd March 2019, scoring twice in a 4-1 away victory over Busan IPark.  Irronically, his final game in Korea was also against Busan IPark in the Second Round of the K-League 1 Play Off.  This time however, there was to be no goal scoring for the midfielder as FC Anyang were defeated 0-1.
