NO FANS

Barely 24 hours after announcing that the Super Cup will be played behind closed doors with no fans allowed, the V-League have announced that their will be no fans in attendance for Week 1 of the 2020 V-League 1 Season due to the continuing Covid-9 concerns which gets under way on Friday 6th March.  Although disappointing to fans, this decision will not unduly disturb the VFF who have very little regard for fans.  City are due to open their season with a trip to Tam Kỳ to take on Quảng Nam FC.  The Supporters Club were planning to run a bus to this game but that has now been cancelled.

City today announced the signing of two new players to complete their 2020 Squad.  Forward Alexandre Monteiro De Lima joins City from Korean K-League 2 side FC Anyang after spells with Suwon FC and MLS sides Houston Dynamos and Chicago Fire.  31 year old Alex  will wear the number 88 shirt.  Meanwhile, the club has confirmed the signing of Korean Seo Yong-duk.  The 30 year old midfielder has been with the club for a couple of weeks now as he completed his paperwork.  His previous club was Korean side Busan IPark.

NO TICKETS ON SALE

Vietnamese Super Cup Ticket Update : Due to the continuing Corona Virus health concerns.  There will be NO TICKETS AVAILABLE for Sunday's Super Cup Match against Hà Nội FC.  There were discussions about the possibility of each team's Supporters Club getting 100 tickets each.  This now appears to have been ruled out.  The game also has a new kick off time of 16:30 and not 19:00.  It will be shown live on VTV.  Bizarrely, prior to the game there will be speeches made, addressing the crowd on how to combat the virus.  That would be the crowd that the same people who are making the speeches have banned!!!

Final Score.jpg

City made history tonight by securing their first ever victory in the AFC Cup with a 3-2 away victory in Singapore over Hougang United.  The final score was not a true reflection on the overall game which City largely dominated, creating (and wasting) several excellent chances on top of the three goals scored.  First half strikes from Công Phượng (15 minutes) and Baldé (45 minutes) were more than justified and when Baldé (59 minutes) made it 3-0 on the night.  All was just nice and dandy.  Then the referee decided to get his name in lights and award an astonishingly bad penalty decision which was duly converted by Plazibat on 77 minutes.  Moments later and the same player was to make it 2-3.  But City were not to be denied their historic win.

Match Day v Hougang United.jpg

It's Match Day 2 in Group F of the 2020 AFC Cup and City take on Hougang United of Singapore this evening at the Jalan Besar Stadium.  City will be looking to gain their first victory in the group after securing a commendable point away to Yangon United of Myanmar last time out.  Once again there is no place in the City squad for striker Matias who remains in HCMC.  Injuries to Trần Thanh Bình, Đỗ Văn Thuận and Viktor Prodell mean that the trio also remain in HCMC to work on their recovery.  Meanwhile, Vũ Quang Nam continues his recovery at PVF Acadamy.

Kick Off is at 19:30 Singapore Time (18:30 Vietnam) and is live on FOX SPORTS ASIA HD Channel.

Team News will be posted here and on Twitter @HCMCFC1 when available.  Match updates will be via Twitter.

Lee Nguyễn Not Joining City.jpg

The "Is he", "Isn't he", "Will he" and "Won't he" saga surrounding the proposed signing of Vietnamese / American midfielder Lee Nguyễn from David Beckham's Inter Miami FC side seems to be finally settled as a 'No'.  After apparently agreeing a transfer fee and personal terms, media is reporting that Inter Miami refused to let the player leave for City.

Hougang Utd Match Goes Ahead.jpg

Despite City's request via the VFF to postpone next Tuesday's AFC Cup game in Singapore, and despite the number of Virus cases continuing to grow in the City State, the AFC in the infinite wisdom have decided that the game will go ahead.   Scant regard has been shown for the safety of players, coaching staff and any fans (me) that might make the trip.  This decision has put the club in an impossible position and is one that hopefully does not come back to haunt the AFC.

Match Day 1 v Yangon United.jpg

City take on Yangon United of Myanmar today in their opening match of Group F in the 2020 AFC Cup Competition.  This will be a historic moment for the Club as it is the first time that City have appeared in the competition.  Yangon Utd are five games into their domestic season and have already played two games in qualifying for the Group Stages of this particular competition and will therefore provide stiff opposition.  They (Yangon Utd) were also the only team to defeat Hà Nội FC in last season's competition so their pedigree should not be under-estimated.  The game kicks off at 16:00 (Vietnamese Time) and is live on Fox Sports 2.  Regular updates will be posted on Twitter account @HCMCFC1 during the game.

Dates Update.jfif

2020 Season Update: The VFF have released a new set of proposed dates for the 2020 Season in the wake of the on-going Corona Virus health crisis.  According to the new dates (which unfortunately are due to change given the unforeseen circumstances) the dates are as follows :

Super Cup QG 2019 match against Hà Nội FC will now take place at the SVĐ Thống Nhất on Sunday 1st March 2020.

The V.League 1 season will now begin on Saturday 7th March.  However, as City's opening game away to Quảng Nam FC was due to take place on a Friday, it can be assumed that the new date for this game will be Friday 6th March with a kick off time of 17:00.  The season is now due to finish on Saturday 24th October.  The National Cup is due to begin on Friday 3rd April but there is at present no date for City's home tie against the winners of the CLB đá Huế v SHB Đà Nẵng tie.

Final Score v ISPE.jpg

City's opening opponents in Group F of the 2020 AFC Cup Yangon United, finished their preparations with a convincing 2-0 domestic victory over ISPE FC in the 5th Round of the Myanmar Premier League.  Goals in either half via Aboubacar (40 minutes) and Maung Maung Lwin (57 minutes) were enough to secure the points for Yangon.  Yangon go into Tuesday's tie with City on the back of seven competitive matches to City's one and most really fancy their chances.  Especially on home soil.  City, for their part, will not have failed to notice that Yangon are susceptible to quick attacks and a more capable attack today from ISPE could have seen a different outcome.  It is thought that City will depart for Yangon on Sunday 9th February in preparation for the game on Tuesday 11th February.

7th February 2020

Friendly Update: : HCM City 0-1 Becamex Bình Dương.  City lost their behind closed doors warm up game against V-League 1 side B. Bình Dương.  The only goal of today’s game coming via Tô Văn Vũ. The team will now depart for Myanmar and prepare for the opening AFC Cup Group F game against Yangon United to be played at the SVĐ Thuwunna.

2nd February 2020

It is being reported on the Football Association of Singapore website that City's AFC Cup Group F game is to be moved from the Jalan Besar Stadium to Hougang Stadium.  Ironically this used to be Hougang United's old stomping ground.  The change is due to the impending re-turfing at Jalan Besar Stadium, which served as the home-ground for Hougang United in 2019. The artificial pitch, which was last re-turfed in 2014, is due for a change of surface to one of a higher quality.
