After graduating from the Thể Công Youth Acadamy, the young midfielder, aged 24, was to head south to join Sài Gòn FC who had themselves travelled south from the capital Hà Nội to relocate in Ho Chi Minh City.
Making his debut on 28th February 2016 in Sài Gòn FC’s 1-0 away victory over Đồng Tháp. A game which saw current City striker Nguyễn Xuân Nam on the bench for Sài Gòn FC as an unused substitute. Four months later and Văn Thuận had his first professional goal. Scoring Sài Gòn’s 3rd goal on 42 minutes in the 3-3 home draw against Hải Phòng FC.
Đỗ Văn Thuận was to face City twice prior to joining them and both occasions were during the 2017 Season. Appearing in the 0-1 home defeat on 18th January 2017 before scoring Sài Gòn’s 3rd goal in the 3-1 away victory on 29th October 2017. Former City striker Lê Hoàng Thiên was also on the scoresheet that night for Sài Gòn.
His 50th and last game for Sài Gòn FC was on 25th November 2017. Sài Gòn FC winning 3-0 at home to a Hải Phòng FC side that included current City midfielder Vũ Ngọc Thịnh in their line up.
Văn Thuận joined City for the start of the 2018 Season and made his City debut in the 2018 Season Opener away to Thanh Hóa FC. A game which City were to lose 0-1 and included (for Thanh Hóa) current City keeper Bùi Tiến Dũng and current midfielder Ngô Hoàng Thịnh. On Thanh Hóa’s bench was another current City player, 1st choice keeper Nguyễn Thanh Thắng.
Văn Thuận’s first City goal was to come in the 67th minute of City’s 2-2 away draw against Hoàng Anh Gia Lai on 3rd June 2018.
City’s midfielder has also spent time with the Vietnamese National Team squad and was an unused substitute against Afghanistan in 2017.
