Heralding from Nghệ An, and a product of the Sông Lam Nghệ An (SLNA) Youth Team, Ngô Hoàng Thịnh was promoted the club’s first team in time for the start of the 2011 V-League 1 Season. Hoàng Thịnh was still only 18 years old when he made his debut, coming on as a 72nd minute substitute in SLNA’s 2-2 away draw at Long An on 22nd January 2011. However, it was two months later when the young midfielder was to make his full debut, starting for SLNA against VB Addu of the Maldives in the 2011 AFC Cup. It was during this game, on 15th March 2011, that Hoàng Thịnh was also to score his first professional goal. Scoring his side’s 3rd goal of the night in a 3-1 away victory.
He was however to wait almost two years before scoring his first league goal. And after waiting almost two years, two goals were to come in just over two minutes in the same game. After coming on as a 63rd minute substitute against FLC Thanh Hóa on 1st February 2013, he was to score in the 75th and 79th minute in a 4-0 home victory. In the SLNA side that day was a young Trần Phi Sơn who has subsequently also joined City’s ranks.
Hoàng Thịnh’s final game for his home team was on 1st September 2013 in the 0-3 away defeat at XSKT Cần Thơ.
Following five successful seasons with his home club, making 96 appearances, and scoring 5 times, Ngô Hoàng Thịnh was to leave the comforts of home and moved to Thanh Hóa where he was to stay for three seasons.
After making his debut for his new club on 20th February 2016 in a 3-0 home victory over Hà Nội FC. His first goal came barely a month later, scoring his side’s second goal of the game on 62 minutes in Thanh Hóa’s 4-2 away victory at Than Quảng Ninh on 12th March 2016. After sitting out much of the 2017 season with injury, Hoàng Thịnh was to bounce back in 2018 making 27 appearances in total including 6 games in AFC International Cup Competitions. Hoàng Thịnh’s 56th and final game for Thanh Hóa came on 28th September 2018 in the 1-0 away victory over the club where it all began … Sông Lam Nghệ An. On Thanh Hóa’s bench for that game was current City keeper Nguyễn Thanh Thắng.
2019 was to see a new chapter in the career of Ngô Hoàng Thịnh as he ventured south to join City prior to the start of the 2019 Season. Hoàng Thịnh was to make his City debut on the opening night of the season, playing a big part in City’s opening day victory over Hải Phòng FC. A game City were to win 1-0 with a very late goal. City’s new boy was to open his goalscoring account on 1st March 2019, scoring the opening goal in the 56th minute of City’s 2-1 away victory over Hoàng Anh Gia Lai in Pleiku.
Ngô Hoàng Thịnh is also a regular in Vietnam’s National Team set up across all age groups and is currently part of the 2022 World Cup squad.
