After joining City from his home town of Đồng Tháp where he was to make 3 appearances during the 2015 season as a 21 year old, the young keeper has had to play second or even third fiddle at times behind some excellent City keepers.  However, given the players patience and desire to learn, rather than moan he has watched and learned.  Becoming a young keeper with promise.

Nguyễn Sơn Hải’s early career promised much.  After winning the National U19 Championship in 2012 with his home town, Sơn Hải was called into the National U19 and U20 Cup teams.  Unfortunately for the young keeper, his career was beginning at a time when football in Đồng Tháp was on the demise.  The result was several moves in an attempt to find regular football and a regular club.

2018 and a still young Sơn Hải was given his chance with City.  Making his debut on 30th May 2018 in the 0-0 home draw against Quảng Nam making 9 further appearances that season.  2019 saw the arrival of Nguyễn Thanh Thắng from Thanh Hóa which was to limit opportunities. In fact, apart from a number of appearances on the bench, the young keeper was unable to add to his appearance figures.
